Five Lions in three events from Boys Track & Field punched their ticket to the OHSAA DII State Meet.
At the Regional Meet at Austintown Fitch High School on May 23rd and 25th, the 4x400 Meter Relay, Rob Bonchak in the 400 Meter Dash, and
Casey McInnerney in the Long Jump excelled.
In Thursday's qualifying for the running events, the Boys 4x400 Meter Relay team of sophomore Rob Bonchak, juniors
Sean Butler and
Brennen Burke, and senior
Holden Kajfasz finished in second place with a time of 3:24.76.
Rob Bonchak also advanced to Saturday's finals in the 400 Meter Dash and as part of the 4x400 Meter Relay. He placed sixth out of 15 competitors with a time of 49.80.
In the Long Jump finals on Thursday, freshman
Casey McInnerney made school history as the first student-athlete from Boys Track & Field to qualify for the State Tournament in a field event. He set a new PR mark of 20 feet, 10 inches, which placed him fourth out of 16 jumpers in the event.
In Saturday's finals for the running events, the 4x400 Meter Relay team and Bonchak in the 400 Meter Dash continued to shine, beating their qualifying round times on Thursday.
The 4x400 Meter Relay took second place of eight teams, with a time of 3:24.30, 46 tenths of a second faster than Thursday's time. Bonchak finished in third place of eight runners in the 400 Meter Dash with a new PR and school record time of 49.01. His time was nearly one second quicker than his qualifying sprint time. With that, both the 4x400 Meter Relay team and Bonchak in the 400 Meter Dash, advanced to the State Meet.
Due to construction at The Ohio State University's Track & Field Stadium, this year's State Meet will be hosted by the University of Dayton at Dayton's Welcome Stadium from May 31st to June 1st.
