BOYS BASKETBALL
vs Padua (12/16)- Boys Varsity Basketball defeated Padua 76-73 at home for their first conference win of the season. The Lions outscored the Bruins by ten points in the fourth quarter to erase their seven-point deficit at the start of the third. Senior Luke Keep scored a game and career-high 21 points and hit three three-pointers. Juniors Robby Lipowski and Jason Rook also tallied new career-highs in scoring with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Wes Jacobson also contributed double-figure scoring with ten points and knocked down two three-pointers. Jack Sonby came off the bench and scored eight big points, four of them scored in the final two minutes of the game to give the Lions the lead. Boys JV and Freshman Basketball lost 65-32 and 53-52.
at Elyria Catholic (12/19)- Boys Varsity Basketball picked up their second straight conference win 68-67 over Elyria Catholic on the road. The Lions trailed the Panthers by 12 points heading into halftime. NDCL regrouped at halftime and turned up the defensive pressure, holding Elyria Catholic to just seven points and outscoring them 17-7. The rest of the game was neck-and-neck as the Lions and Cougars traded one and two-point leads. In the end, NDCL executed down the stretch and grinded out the one-point hard fought win. The team was led by Brendan Hernan with a game-high 25 points, his third 20-plus point game of the season. Wesley Jacobson added an impressive 17 points and Luke Keep scored 11. Boys JV Basketball won their first game of the season 68-48 over Elyria Catholic. Lions Boys Basketball will be back in action on Saturday, December 27th at Gilmour Academy.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
vs Padua (12/17)- Girls Varsity Basketball fell 62-52 to Padua in a home NCC clash. The Lions outscored Padua 25-10 in the fourth quarter to cut the Bruins' lead to just ten points from 25 points at the end of the third. Sophomore Coco Cochran led the Lions with a team-high 21 points, her second game this season scoring 20-plus. Cochran also knocked down a career-high three three-pointers. Senior Brynn Munn followed with 16 points and also hit a new career-high four three-pointers. Girls JV Basketball lost 42-28 to Padua.
at Elyria Catholic (12/20)- Girls Varsity Basketball lost 54-32 to conference foe Elyria Catholic on the road. The Lions' tough offensive start proved too much to come back from in their loss to Elyria Catholic as they were outscored 23-1 in the first quarter. NDCL tied the Panthers 9-9 in the second quarter, won the third quarter 11-10, and trailed by just one point in the fourth quarter 12-11. Brynn Munn scored a team-high ten points and knocked down three three-pointers. Coco Cochran tallied eight points, and Gia Roberts came off the bench and contributed seven points. Girls JV Basketball lost 34-28 to Elyria Catholic. NDCL Girls Basketball returns to the court on Tuesday, December 23rd to face the Chaney Cowboys.
GIRLS GYMNASTICS
vs Solon/Mayfield (12/19)- Girls Gymnastics competed in a tri-meet with Solon and Mayfield High Schools at Elite Gymnastics on Friday. NDCL defeated Solon 121.2-95.75 and fell 122.95-121.2 to Mayfield. Senior Ava Lewandowski led the Lions with a second-place finish on vault and two seventh place finishes on both beam and all around. Anna Barabas took third on vault, eighth on all around, and tenth on beam. Sophia Flynn tied for ninth on bars and finished in tenth place on beam.
WRESTLING
Soap Super Duals (12/20)- NDCL Wrestling competed in the Soap Super Duals hosted by Vermilion High School on Friday and Saturday. On Friday (day one) of the tournament, the Lions fell to Vermilion (51-15), St. Edward (65-12), Midview (36-22), and Huron (44-10). In Saturday's final day of the duals, NDCL lost to Avon (68-0), Twinsburg (68-18), Port Clinton (59-15), Columbiana (45-23), and Lorain (57-17). Trey Sweeney went 6-3 in his matches in the 175-weight class. Massimo Beatrice won five of his nine matches at 215 and Wil Dauenhaur went 4-5 at 113. Zach Bores finished 3-6 at 190. The Lions return to the mats on Thursday, January 8th in their first dual meet at NDCL hosting Shaw.
SWIMMING
Jim Stacey Winter Championships (12/20)- The Girls and Boys Swim teams competed in the highly anticipated Jim Stacey Winter Championships at SPIRE Institute on Saturday. Brooke Dynes led the way for both teams taking first place in the 100-breaststroke event and breaking her own school record for the third time. She set a new NDCL record time of 1:04.34, beating her previous record time by 1.22. Dynes also took second in the 200-IM with a new personal best time of 2:13.74. Her first-place time ranks her second in the state for the 100-breaststroke and top ten in the state for her 200-IM time. Lillie Engle finished in ninth place in both the 50 and 100 freestyles out of 120-plus swimmers entered in the B meet. Mark LaForest had the top finish for the boys team, taking fourth in the 100-free out of 102 swimmers in the B meet.
ICE HOCKEY
vs Bay (12/20)- NDCL Ice Hockey defeated Bay 4-0 for their fourth straight win on CYO/Youth Night at Mentor Ice Arena. Senior Colin Krajnak and freshman Josh Gucciardo led the Lions scoring two goals each. Anthony Golden, Joshua Hollobaugh, and Nicholas Rosca all tallied one assist in the win. Goalie Nate McClellan recorded 18 saves on 18 shots for his first career shutout. The Lions improved to 6-3-1 and 5-0 in conference play. The team returns to the rink on Saturday, December 27th versus North Olmsted.
