Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin football found itself in a defensive contest Friday night, with one first-half touchdown providing the difference in a 7-0 loss to West Geauga in the Lions' home opener.

NDCL's defense kept the Lions within one possession throughout the night. West Geauga broke through on a long touchdown run in the first half, but the Lions did not allow another score.

Braeden Ryan provided a standout performance defensively as part of a unit that consistently gave the NDCL offense opportunities to draw even.

The Lions moved the football but were unable to finish a drive in the end zone.

Drake Berschig led the receiving effort with four catches for 64 yards. Blake Dummermuth added three receptions for 45 yards, while Robby Lipowski carried six times for 35 yards.

NDCL remained within striking distance late in the game and had an opportunity to extend a drive, but West Geauga forced a turnover on downs. The Wolverines then ran out the remaining time to secure the victory.

The result moves NDCL to 1-1 following its season-opening 42-16 road victory over Struthers.

The Lions remain at home for their next contest against Kenston.
