Lion Sports Weekly (Week of October 27th)

BOYS SOCCER 
vs Bay (10/29)- NDCL Boys Soccer lost in a 1-2 heartbreaker in overtime to Bay Village, the number one seed in the OHSAA tournament. The Lions went toe-to-toe with the Rockets, holding them scoreless in the first half and for 32 minutes of the second half in a phenomenal defensive effort. Bay scored in the 32nd minute of the second half on a penalty kick to put them up 1-0. The Lions roared back as Ryan Cvitkovic scored on a one-on-one breakaway with four minutes remaining in the game to tie the score at one. The game then went into overtime, and Bay was able to capitalize on a goal to give them the victory. NDCL's strong defensive attack was led by goalie Kristian Mazar, holding a high-powered Bay offense to just two goals. The Lions fell in the regional semifinal, ending their incredible postseason run. Boys Soccer completes the 2025 season with an 11-7-3 record under first-year head coach Luciano Ruscitto. Congratulations to NDCL Boys Soccer on a great season! 
 
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL 
vs Gilmour Academy (10/30)- NDCL Girls Volleyball swept Gilmour Academy 3-0 to advance to the program's fourth straight regional championship match. The Lions handled Gilmour in three sets 25-20, 25-15, and 25-23 in Thursday's regional semifinal at Mentor High School. Frankie Brkic paced the Lions with a team-high 12 kills to go along with five digs and two blocks. Mia Moissis also tallied double-digit kills with 11 and had eight digs and two aces. Tora Forte made a big impact for the Lions with five kills, six digs, and a game-high four blocks. Grace Daniels led the team with 34 assists, 10 digs, and five kills. Abby Tolin recorded a team-high 22 kills and one ace. The Lions face Kenston on Saturday in the regional final with a trip to the state tournament on the line.  

vs Kenston (11/1)-
NDCL Girls Volleyball dominated Kenston 3-0 to win a regional title and trip to the state final four. The Lions were in control through three sets, winning the first 25-20, the second set 25-17, and taking the final set 25-17 to sweep. Frankie Brkic and Mia Moissis both tallied double-digit kills and digs in the game. Brkic had a team-high 12 kills and 11 digs and Moissis notched 11 kills and a team best 14 digs. Grace Daniels recorded a game-high 40 assists to go along with 10 digs and five kills. Abby Tolin led the Lions defense with 13 digs and Charlie Mann came off the bench and contributed a game-high three aces. NDCL Girls Volleyball are regional champions and will advance to the state final four for the first time since 2022. The Lions will take on Bloom-Carroll on Friday, November 7th at 1:30 PM at Wittenburg University. 
 
FOOTBALL 
vs Hubbard (10/31)- NDCL Football defeated Hubbard 35-13 in the first round of the OHSAA Region 13 Playoffs for the program's first playoff win since 2020. NDCL's defense held the Eagles scoreless in the first half as the Lions jumped out to a 21-0 lead heading into the third quarter. Hubbard scored 13 unanswered points in the third quarter, but their comeback came up short as the Lions scored twice in the fourth quarter and held the Eagles to zero in the final quarter of play. Quarterback Brady Capel led the Lions offense with 232 all-purpose yards, one rushing touchdown, and completed seven of his 14 pass attempts. Dylan Hoenigman recorded 62 rushing yards on 18 carries and a score. He also caught a team-high of three passes for 39 yards. Blake Dumermuth ran for an 11-yard touchdown, and Braeden Ryan scored twice from the three-yard line. The Lions dominated the run game with 185 total yards and five rushing touchdowns. Jonah Janosy and Rob Bonchak caught one pass each for 38 and 36 yards. The NDCL defense also had another strong showing in the game, holding Hubbard to just two scores and forcing two turnovers. Braeden Ryan logged a team-high of eight tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and a fumble recovery. Brendan Hernan also tallied eight tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, and a fumble recovery. Vance Marut and Robby Lipowski each recorded a sack in the game. NDCL Football will advance to the second round of the OHSAA Region 13 Playoffs for the first time in five years. The eighth-seeded Lions face the number one seed Perry Pirates in the second round next Friday night at Perry High School.  
 
CROSS COUNTRY 
Zoey Myers at OHSAA State Meet (11/1)- Junior Zoey Myers ran a fantastic race at the OHSAA DII Girls Cross Country State Meet on Saturday. Myers finished in 30th place overall of 216 runners in DII. She completed the race with a time of 19:08.03. Congratulations, Zoey, on a great performance at state and a terrific junior season of Cross Country!
