Lion Sports Weekly (Week of January 12th)

GIRLS BASKETBALL 
vs West Geauga (1/12)- Girls Varsity Basketball picked up a big win over West Geauga 63-36 on the homecourt of the Cleveland Cavaliers as part of the Cavs Elite HS Hoops Series. The Lions ended the second quarter on a 16-2 run to lead the Wolverines 31-26 at halftime. NDCL found their offensive groove in the second half as they outscored West Geauga 32-10 in the third and fourth quarters. Leading the Lions once again was sophomore Coco Cochran with a game-high 22 points; her fifth 20-plus point game in 14 games played so far this season. Senior Maya Rowan followed with 12 points. The Lions knocked down four threes in the game courtesy of Brynn Munn (2), Frankie Sargi, and Emma Surbey. Girls Varsity Basketball has won five of their eight non-conference games with just one remaining this season versus Geneva on January 31st.

t Lake Catholic (1/14)- Girls Varsity Basketball defeated Lake Catholic in a thrilling, come from behind win 41-40. The Lions trailed 36-28 at the end of the third quarter, but the team kept fighting and found their offensive groove in the fourth. NDCL outscored the Cougars 13-4 and made some big plays down the stretch to secure the one-point comeback victory. The fourth quarter run was led by Coco Cochran, scoring seven of her game-high 13 points in the final eight minutes of play. Maya Rowan recorded 12 points for the second straight game. Rowan scored six of her 12 points in the first quarter and made multiple hustle and defensive plays that kept the Lions in it. Senior Emma Surbey knocked down two crucial three-pointers, a game-high. Girls Varsity Basketball improved to 8-7 on the season and 2-4 in conference play.

s Beaumont (1/17)- Girls Varsity Basketball swept their season series against Beaumont on senior day with a 51-31 win. The Lions led the Blue Streaks for the entire game, and a 22-9 fourth quarter sealed the victory. Maya Rowan recorded a game and career-high 18 points that included three three-pointers. Fallon Campolieti followed with 10 points and Brynn Munn chipped in with eight..The Lions knocked down a season-high seven three-pointers and shot 82 percent from the free throw line. The team celebrated its five seniors on senior day in Brynn Munn, Maya Rowan, Sadie Skotzke, Emma Surbey, and Maddy Varga. Girls JV Basketball also defeated Beaumont 30-14.  
 
BOWLING 
vs VASJ (1/13)- NDCL Girls Bowling defeated VASJ 1595-1493 for their seventh win of the season. Sophomore Katie McGill scored the high game for the Lions with her new career-high of 156. Senior Josie Mislay recorded the high series with a 284. Boys Bowling lost 1911-1851 to VASJ. Senior Mitchell Wesen posted the high game for the Lions with a 185 and fellow senior Aaron Cotturo had the team's high series of 326.  

Boys 
at Lake Catholic (1/14)- Boys Bowling fell to Lake Catholic 2322-1810. Mitchell Wesen was the high bowler for the Lions with a 178 high game and 338 high series. Aaron Cotturo bowled his season high series, and freshman Dominic Cirino recorded his career-high game.  
 
Girls at Mentor (1/14)- Girls Bowling suffered their first loss in three matches to Mentor 2035-1633. Josie Mislay led the Lions with a 156 high game and 308 high series. Junior Marielle Matz bowled her season high series, and freshmen Juliette Benscath and Maggie Dunlap both recorded their new career high game and high series.  
 
BOYS BASKETBALL 
at Geneva (1/13)- Boys Varsity Basketball won their second straight game with a 76-62 win over Geneva on the road. The Lions had a dominant night offensively, scoring 15-plus points in all four quarters. The team outscored Geneva 24-4 in the second quarter and 15-9 in the third. Junior Robby Lipowski recorded two new career-highs in both points (18) and three-pointers made with four. Senior Luke Keep also contributed double figure scoring with 13 points. Eight Lions contributed a minimum of three points in the win. Boys JV Basketball topped Geneva 58-43 and Boys Freshman Basketball lost 33-29.

t Lake Catholic (1/16)- Boys Varsity Basketball defeated rival Lake Catholic 54-48 for their third straight win. The Lions and Cougars were neck-and-neck through four quarters; trading leads multiple times. NDCL led by just one point heading into a tight fourth quarter of play. With under two minutes remaining in the game, junior Jason Rook knocked down two pressure free throws to give the Lions a two-possession lead. NDCL was able to make plays down the stretch, knocked down their free throws, and handled Lake Catholic's full-court pressure. Rook recorded a game and career-high 18 points in the win that included four big three-pointers. Brendan Hernan notched 16 points and Luke Keep contributed 11. The Varsity Lions moved to 3-3 in conference play and 6-7 overall. Boys JV and Freshman Basketball both topped the Cougars 51-50 and  
 
SWIMMING 
NCC Championships (1/17)- The Boys and Girls Swim teams competed in the North Coast Conference Championships at Hathaway Brown on Saturday. The boys team finished in third place with 88 points and the girls team took fourth place with 84 points. Brooke Dynes led both teams winning her third straight conference title in the 100-breaststroke. She also set a new school, conference, and pool record with a time of 1:03.98. Dynes also won a conference championship in the 200-IM taking first place with a time of 2:11.65. The girls 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay (Dynes, Madalena Fulton, Engoglia, Engle) took second place with a times of 2:05.09 and 4:14.79. Tommy Matthews finished third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:02.13. Eli Charlton and Mark LaForest took fourth and fifth in the 50 freestyle with times of 24.52 and 24.65. LaForest also finished third in the 100 freestyle in 55.48. Lillie Engle finished in fourth place with a time of 1:04.52 in the 100 freestyle. Lincoln Miller took fifth in the 500 freestyle in 6:17.68 and fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:12.57). The boys 200 freestyle relay (LaForest, Charlton, Noah Scheider, Brady Schneider) finished second with a time of 1:43.98.  
 
WRESTLING 
Berkshire Battle for the Belt (1/17)- NDCL Wrestling finished in 14th place of 20 teams competing in the Berkshire Battle for the Belt tournament. Wil Dauenhauer (106), Braeden Jacobson (165), and Zach Bores (190) all took seventh place overall and went 3-2 in their matches. Trey Sweeney (175) finished in eighth place, going 2-3 in his matches.  
 
ICE HOCKEY 
vs North Olmsted (1/17)- NDCL Ice Hockey extended their win streak to eight games with a 3-1 win over North Olmsted. Lion goals were scored by freshmen Josh Gucciardo and Wyatt Clemens Basham and senior Colin Krajnak. Assists came from Nicholas Rosca (2), Gucciardo, Nic Davis, and Luis Enrique Heredia. Nate McClellan recorded 17 saves on 18 shots on goal. The team improved to a perfect 9-0 in conference play and 10-3-1 overall. 
 
INDOOR TRACK 
SPIRE HS Invitational (1/17)- The Boys and Girls Indoor Track teams competed in the SPIRE HS Invitational on Saturday. Both teams set a combined five school records in the meet. The first school record was set by the girls 4x200 relay team of Emilee Gruss, Melanie Drazdik, Lucy Edger, and Haley Kerens in 1:52.00 (fifth place). Rob Bonchak set the record in the 300M run with a time of 35.17 (second place). Zoey Myers and Lucy Edger broke the 800M run (first place) and 600M (fourth place) run records with times of 2:27.00 and 1:42.35. Casey McInnerney tied the school's 200M dash (eighth place) record in 22.84. Bonchak and Milk took sixth and eighth place in the 600M run with times of 1:25.59 and 1:34.46. Andrew Sepelak took seventh place in the 60M hurdles in 9.37. Kristian Mazar finished eighth in the high jump with a 5'6 mark.   

JCU HS Meet #1 (1/18)-
 Boys and Girls Indoor Track traveled to John Carroll University for the JCU HS Meet for the second day of back-to-back meets. The girls team was led by Zoey Myers, Lucy Edger, and Melanie Drazdik, all with individual first place finishes. Myers in the 400M dash (1:04.13), Edger in the 800M run (2:29.56), and Drazdik in the triple jump (27-8.75). Emilee Gruss took second place in the 200M dash in 27.00 flat. The girls 4x200 and 4x400 relays both finished in first place with times of 2:09.83 and 4:21.58. Casey McInnerney recorded three third place finishes in the triple jump (38-8.25), long jump (20-5.25), and 60M dash (7.14). Rob Bonchak took first place in the 200M dash (22.94) and McInnerney followed in second place in the event (23.22). The 4x400 and 4x200 relays finished in first (3:49.77) and third place (1:47.33). Bonchak also took fourth in the triple jump (37-8.75) and Mazar finished fifth in the high jump with a 5'7 mark.
