Personal improvement highlighted Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin cross country's performance Saturday at the Madison "U Wanna Come Back" Invitational, where 10 Lions established personal records.
Six of NDCL's seven boys and four of its five girls recorded PRs against a large field, providing an encouraging individual result as the Lions continue working to improve their team finishes.
The boys placed 19th among 35 scoring teams. Kyle Nedved led NDCL in 34th place, while Tyler Milk followed in 53rd. Milk continued his strong season alongside Nedved as both helped set the pace for the Lions.
Nathan Zanko placed 108th, Blake Newman was 194th and Luis Enrique Heredia-Salinas finished 198th to complete NDCL's scoring five. Newman and Heredia-Salinas continued their recent improvement with personal-best performances.
In the open race, Noah Scheider placed 108th and Joe Jagodnik finished 222nd. Nedved, Milk, Newman, Heredia-Salinas, Scheider and Jagodnik all recorded PRs.
The girls competed without Zoey Meyers, who was ill, and finished 24th among 29 scoring teams.
Avery Bender led the Lions in 143rd, followed by Kennedy Smith in 165th, Lucy Edger in 175th, Caroline Weaver in 180th and Katya Cobb in 182nd. Bender, Smith, Weaver and Cobb each established personal records.
Edger continued to make progress in her return from injury.
While NDCL's team finishes showed there remains work ahead, the individual improvement was significant. The Lions continue to focus on closing gaps within their scoring groups and building greater depth as the season progresses.
