Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin and Lake Catholic added another five-set chapter to their school rivalry, with the Lions prevailing 25-19, 16-25, 25-19, 18-25, 15-13.
NDCL, ranked No. 7 in the OHSVCA Division III coaches poll, twice took a one-set advantage before Lake Catholic answered, sending the match to a decisive fifth set. With little separating the teams in the finale, the Lions closed out the rivalry victory, 15-13.
Frankie Brkic led the NDCL attack with 19 kills while adding 10 digs, two blocks and an ace. Madeline Rand contributed a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs to go with two aces, while Audra Smith finished with eight kills and four blocks.
Setter Kami Titman directed the offense with 33 assists while contributing three kills, five digs, one ace and one block.
Defensively, Sam Wheeler anchored the back row with a match-high 32 digs. Wheeler also created pressure from the service line with five aces and added six assists. Kendall Sminchak recorded three kills and three blocks, while Juliana Janosy added two kills and two blocks.
The Lions needed contributions throughout the lineup to withstand Lake Catholic's responses in the second and fourth sets. After neither team could string together consecutive set victories, the match came down to two points in the fifth.
NDCL delivered those points when it mattered, securing a 15-13 fifth-set victory and a win over its rival.
