GIRLS GOLF
at Lake Catholic (9/2)- Girls Varsity Golf defeats rival Lake Catholic in a one-stroke tiebreaker 181-180. Junior Alexis Urigel led the Lions with a match best score of 38. Senior Ava Lewandowski followed with a 43, Lillian Kasper scored a 49, and Claire Ribic tallied a 50. Taylor Wallingford won the tiebreaker for the Lions, defeating her opponent from Lake Catholic by one stroke scoring a 51. The Lions moved to 5-0 in North Coast Conference play.
GIRLS TENNIS
at Elyria Catholic (9/2)- Girls Varsity Tennis defeated Elyria Catholic on the road on Tuesday 4-1. Ella Workinger made her return to the court from injury and made an immediate impact, as she defeated her opponent 6-0, 6-0 in first singles. Emma Wilcox and Lea Nemer also were victorious in their matches in second and third singles. Wilcox won 7-5, 6-2 and Nemer won 6-0, 6-3. The doubles team of Makenna Marrott/Anne Stief topped their opponent in second doubles 6-1, 6-0. Girls JV Tennis also took care of business and won 6-0 over the Panthers.
vs Beaumont (9/3)- Girls Varsity Tennis won their second straight conference match 4-1 over Beaumont at home. Ella Workinger defeated her opponent once again 6-0, 6-0 in first singles. Emma Wilcox and Leah Nemer topped their opponents in second and third singles 6-1, 7-5 and 6-2, 6-2. The doubles team of Makenna Marrott/Audrey Kilmer got the win in second doubles 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Girls JV Tennis also won their second match in a row, defeating Beaumont 5-1. The Varsity Lions will be back in action on Monday, September 8th at Mentor.
BOYS GOLF
at Benedictine (9/4)- The Boys Varsity Golf team defeated Benedictine 169-188 at Highland Park Golf Course on Thursday. The Lions were led by Lincoln Miller, scoring a team best 38 in the match. Freshman Caige Cochran tallied a season best score of 42 for nine holes. Lucas Marlow (43), Hamilton Miller (46), and Paul Williams (46) finished out the Lions' scorecard in the conference dual match. The Varsity Lions moved to 2-1 in match play this season.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
at Elyria Catholic (9/2)- Girls Volleyball lost 3-1 on the road to Elyria Catholic. The Lions won the first set 25-22 but Elyria Catholic began their comeback rally and won the next three sets 29-27, 25-20, and 25-19. Frankie Brkic recorded a team-high of 15 kills to go along with five digs. Mia Moissis had career highs in both kills (14), digs (20), and aces (3). Leah Bender tallied a team and season-high of 25 assists and eight digs. Grace Daniels added 21 assists and ten digs. Abby Tolin had a team and season-highs in both digs (38) and kills (5). JV and Freshman Volleyball both fell to Elyria Catholic 3-1 and 2-0.
vs CVCA (9/4)- Girls Varsity Volleyball defeated CVCA in straight sets at home 3-0. Frankie Brkic paced the Lions once again with a team-high 17 kills and added 11 digs and one ace. Grace Daniels recorded a team-high of 22 assists and added eight digs and two aces. Abby Tolin led the team in digs (13) and aces (3). NDCL's 3-0 win over CVCA was nothing short of a team effort as the Lions racked up a total of 38 kills, 37 digs, and 41 aces. JV Volleyball won 2-0 over CVCA and Freshman Volleyball lost 3-1. Varsity Volleyball moved to 4-3 on the season and 2-2 in conference play. The Lions will return to the court on Tuesday, September 9th at Magnificat.
BOYS SOCCER
vs Padua (9/2)- Boys Varsity Soccer fell to Padua 1-0 in their first conference game of the season. Boys JV Soccer also lost 1-0 to the Bruins at home.
vs Salem (9/4)- Boys Varsity Soccer's Thursday night home contest versus Salem ended in a 3-3 tie. Ryan Cvitkovic put the Lions on the board in the first half, putting the Lions up 1-0. Salem scored the next three goals, one in the first half to tie the score at 1-1 and scored two more in the second half to go up 3-1. Cvitkovic took over in the remaining 15 minutes of the second half, scoring two goals to tie the score at 3-3. Neither team was able to score in the remaining ten minutes of the second half. Cvitkovic completed the game with his first hat trick of the season. His three goals were assisted by three different players in Nico Amoroso, Quinn Cari, and Luka Sesar. Boys JV Soccer topped Salem 1-0. The Lions moved to 2-4-2 on the season and will be back in action on Tuesday, September 9th hosting Elyria Catholic.
GIRLS SOCCER
vs Padua (9/3)- Girls Varsity Soccer defeated Padua 5-1 at home for their first conference win of the season. The Lions scored the first goal of the game on a header from Marija Vukovic assisted by Dria Duqum with four minutes remaining in the first half. Padua scored just one minute later, to tie the score 1-1 going into halftime. The Lions found their offensive rhythm in the second half, as the team put up four goals in the final 20 minutes of the game. Ella Ko, Lexi Dobbert, and Emilee Gruss scored one goal each, extending the Lions' lead to 4-1. The game was capped off by an own goal by Padua to move the score to 5-1. The Varsity Lions moved to 1-1 in conference play and 4-1 on the season. Girls JV Soccer fell 3-1 to the Bruins. The team will be back in action on Monday, September 8th hosting Cleveland Heights in Lion Stadium.
FOOTBALL
at Kenston (9/5)- NDCL Football defeated DIII contender Kenston 48-45 in triple overtime to move to 3-0 on the season. The game was neck-and-neck through four quarters, as the game was tied at 14 at halftime. Kenston scored twice in the opening eight minutes of the third quarter to go up 28-14. The Lions fought back, as Capel scored on a quarterback keeper and threw a touchdown pass to Rob Bonchak to tie it back up at 28 with 42 seconds left in the third. Ryan Cvitkovic connected on a 20-yard field goal and Capel found Cirino in the endzone to put the Lions up 38-28 with 7:51 remaining in the fourth quarter. Kenston struck back in the final seven minutes of the game, scoring a touchdown and field goal on their next two offensive possessions. The game was deadlocked at 38-38 as the game headed into overtime. In the first overtime, Kenston got the ball first and scored a touchdown. The Lions fired back, also scoring a touchdown to tie the score again. Kenston and NDCL then connected on a pair of field goals in the second overtime to send the game into a third overtime. In the third overtime, NDCL got the ball first and Ryan Cvitkovic connected on his third field goal of the game to put the Lions up by three. It was now Kenston's turn for a pressure field goal. The kick was just left of the field goal post and missed, and the Lions went on to win 48-45. Capel was responsible for 399 all-purpose yards on offense, 272 passing and 127 rushing. He also completed 18 of his 30 pass attempts and scored four passing touchdowns and two more rushing. Carmen Cirino had a stellar night on both sides of the field. Offensively, he caught a team-high three passes for 87 yards and a touchdown and on defense he tallied 13 tackles, one interception, and two tackles for loss. Rob Bonchak, Jonah Janosy, and Dylan Hoenigman all caught a touchdown pass in the game from Capel. The Lions were nothing short of impressive on defense. Brendan Hernan led the Lion's defensive attack once again with a 13 tackles, two sacks, and two tackles for loss. Robby Lipowski tallied a team-high 16 tackles and one tackle for loss. Drake Berschig added 11 tackles, two tackles for loss, and one sack in the game. The combined offensive and defensive heroics of each player contributed to the Lions' big win at Kenston. The 3-0 Lions will be back in action Friday night at home in their first-ever NCC matchup versus Benedictine.
CROSS COUNTRY
at Wooster Invitational (9/6)- The NDCL Boys and Girls Cross Country teams competed in the Wooster Invitational at Wooster High School on Saturday morning. Junior Zoey Myers ran the best time for the girls team, finishing in 40th place overall with a time of 19:37.95. Andrea Heredia followed Myers in 139th place with a time of 21:28.95. Lucy Edger finished in 204th (22:49.15), Kennedy Smith took 223rd (24:04.91), and Ellie Heskamp completed the race in 239th place with a time of 24:32.41. Kyle Nedved led the boys team with a season best time of 17:36.15 and took 35th place overall. Tyler Milk finished in 65th place with a time of 18:13.35. Quinn Linnert finished the race in 18:23.30 and took 74th place overall. Alex Willis and Seth Smith finished in 149th and 151st place with times of 19:37.53 and 19:40.90. The NDCL Cross Country program will travel to Boardman for the Boardman Spartan Invitational on September 13th.
