Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin's varsity girls soccer team held Mentor scoreless throughout the second half but could not overcome an early deficit in a 3-0 road loss Saturday, Oct. 10.
Mentor established its advantage during the opening 40 minutes, scoring three first-half goals to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
NDCL responded with a stronger defensive showing after the break, preventing the Cardinals from adding to their lead and playing the second half to a scoreless draw.
Junior goalkeeper Sadie Wurm delivered an outstanding individual performance, finishing with 12 saves against the Mentor attack. Her work in goal helped the Lions limit additional scoring opportunities and keep the match competitive after halftime.
The second-half shutout provided a positive takeaway for NDCL, particularly against an opponent that had found success offensively in the opening half.
While the Lions were unable to generate a goal of their own, their defensive response demonstrated an ability to make adjustments and maintain their organization throughout the final 40 minutes.
NDCL will look to build on that second-half performance as the regular season continues.
The Lions return to action Monday, Oct. 12, when they travel to face Archbishop Hoban in Akron.
