Lion Sports Weekly (Week of February 16th)

BOYS BASKETBALL 
Varsity at Lutheran East (2/16)- Boys Varsity Basketball fell 86-53 to one of the area's top teams in Lutheran East on the road. Wesley Jacobson scored a team-high 23 points, his second consecutive 20-plus point game. Jason Rook followed in double figures with ten points and went 4-4 from the free throw line. The Lions host Elyria Catholic on Senior Night in the regular season finale in McGarry Gym on Wednesday. 

vs Elyria Catholic (2/18)-
 Boys Varsity Basketball lost 87-82 in overtime to Elyria Catholic at home on Senior Night. The Lions and Panthers were neck-and-neck at the start of each of the four quarters. With six minutes to go in the fourth, EC went on a run that put them up 10 points with four minutes left. The Lions refused to give up and fought back to cut the Panthers' lead to just three with four seconds left. Wesley Jacobson knocked down a long distance three-pointer to tie the game 73-73 and send it to overtime. NDCL was outscored in the four-minute overtime 13-9 as Elyria Catholic went on to win 87-82. Luke Keep led the Lions with a career-high 24 points and Brendan Hernan followed just one point behind with 23. Jason Rook recorded 12 points on four three-pointers. The Varsity Lions complete the 2025-26 regular season 9-12 and 7-5 in conference play.  
 
WRESTLING 
vs John Hay/Shaker Heights (2/19)- NDCL Wrestling hosted John Hay and Shaker Heights in a home tri-match for their final home contest of the regular season. NDCL fell 45-24 to Shaker Heights and 39-21 to John Hay. Wil Dauenhauer, David O'Reilly, Anthony Chamoun, Braeden Jacobson, Massimo Beatrice, Zach Bores, and Caleb Roach all picked up wins for the Lions.   

NCC Tournament (2/21)-
 NDCL Wrestling finished sixth place at the North Coast Conference Championships at Padua Franciscan on Saturday. Leading the way for the Lions was Zach Bores, finishing as conference runner-up in the 190-weight class. Wil Dauenhauer, Sal Hoenigman, Braeden Jacobson, and Anthony Chamoun all took fourth place finishes in their weight classes.   

BOYS BOWLING 
Mitchell Wesen at Districts (2/20)- Mitchell Wesen finished in 51st place of 108 individual bowlers at the OHSAA DII Boys Bowling District Tournament on Friday. Wesen bowled a high game of 188 and a three-game series of 526 (161-177-181). Wesen had a solid showing, but his season ends at districts. Congratulations, Mitchell, on a great season and bowling career at NDCL! 
 
SWIMMING 
District Meet (2/20)- Brooke Dynes and Max Platz from Girls and Boys Swimming advanced to the state meet with terrific performances at districts. Dynes will make her third straight appearance at state. The senior will compete in the 100-breast and the 200-IM. She finished the 100-breast in 1:04.20 at districts and holds a fourth-place state rank and completed the 200-IM in 2:12.24 and is ranked 11th in the state for the event. Max Platz qualified for state in the 100-back (2:01.27) and the 50-free (40.16). Platz is the first swimmer in school history to represent NDCL in the state paralympic meet. Dynes and Platz will begin their quest for state titles at the state meet on Thursday/Friday, February 26-27 at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.  
 
INDOOR TRACK 
NEOITC All-Star Meet (2/20)- Boys and Girls Indoor Track competed in the NEOITC All-Star Meet at SPIRE Institute on Friday. Top ten individual results for both teams are as follows: Emilee Gruss- 6th in 200M dash (26.41), 13th in 400M dash (1:02.39) / Emily Boehnlein- 8th in triple jump (27-8) / 4x200 relay- 4th place (1:59.13) / 4x400 relay- 4th place (4:48.52) / Casey McInnerney- 3rd in triple jump (39-9.5), 4th long jump (20-11), 9th in 60M dash (7.16) / 4x400 relay- 9th place (4:05.03). Lucy Edger set a new school record in the 800M run with a time of 2:21.81. The girls 4x200 relay team of Gruss, Edger, Haley Kerens, and Melanie Drazdik set a school record with a time of 1:51.89. The girls 4x400 relay team of Gruss, Edger, Drazdik and Zoey Myers also set a school record with a time of 4:09.16.  
 
ICE HOCKEY 
vs Stow-Munroe Falls (2/21)- Ice Hockey fell in a double overtime heartbreaker 3-2 to Stow-Munroe Falls in the first round of the OHSAA Tournament. Nic Davis scored the first goal of the game on a combined assist from Nicholas Rosca and Wyatt Clemens Basham. Rosca recorded the second goal of the game in the second period that was assisted by Klara Stergar and Joshua Hollobaugh. Goalie Nate McClellan notched a season-high of 39 saves in the game. The Lions complete the 2025-26 season with an overall record of 14-5-1. Congratulations to the Ice Hockey team on a season for the NDCL record books! 
 
GIRLS BASKETBALL 
at Youngstown Chaney (2/21)- #21 NDCL Girls Basketball upset #11 Chaney in the sectional final 58-46. The Lions were in control from the jump, outscoring Chaney in three of the four quarters of play. Chaney did not lead once in the game, which was a testament to the NDCL's preparation in the scouting report and hard-nosed defense. Coco Cochran led the Lions with a game-high 21 points and a career-high of three three-pointers. Emma Surbey followed with 17 points, a new career-high. She also set a career-high with three-pointers made in a game with four. Maya Rowan also scored in double figures with ten points. The Lions, with the help of a great student section that traveled to Chaney, downed the Cowboys in an impressive team win on the road. NDCL will face Akron Ellet in the district semifinal on Wednesday, February 25th at Ellet.
