Four Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin students recently participated in The Sports Broadcasting Camp with John Fanta, held July 20–24 at John Carroll University, where they learned firsthand from some of the most respected professionals in the sports media industry.

Representing NDCL were Abby Tolin '26, Joe Mazzolini '26, Mateo Paul '27, and Joshua Alic '27, who attended the week-long camp alongside NDCL faculty member Mr. Jimmy Vanek '13.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, The Sports Broadcasting Camp partnered with Cleveland native and NBC Sports broadcaster John Fanta to bring its nationally recognized program to Northeast Ohio. Throughout the week, students received hands-on instruction in play-by-play broadcasting, color commentary, television and radio sportscasting, interviewing, podcasting, production, and on-camera reporting while working in the broadcast facilities at John Carroll University. Camp participants also had the opportunity to learn from an outstanding lineup of professional broadcasters and media personalities, including Mike Tirico, Scott Van Pelt, Tom Hamilton, John Fanta, Ken Carman, Anthony Lima, Nick Camino, Brendan Gulick, and others.

"Our students embraced an incredible opportunity to learn from leaders in the sports media industry," said Ryan Miller, Athletic Director at Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin. "Experiences like this challenge students to step outside their comfort zones, develop confidence in their communication skills, and explore potential career paths. Mr. Vanek deserves tremendous credit for bringing this opportunity to our students and investing in their growth beyond the classroom. We are grateful for his leadership and proud of the way Abby, Joe, Mateo, and Joshua represented NDCL throughout the week."

The experience left a lasting impression on the participating students.

Mateo Paul '27 reflected, "I learned how important it is to be authentic and develop your own style as a broadcaster. You have to be a good teammate and be willing to put in the work to become great."

Joe Mazzolini '26 shared, "I learned how important it is to put yourself out there and build relationships with the people you meet. You have to be willing to create your own opportunities."

Abby Tolin '26 added, "It's okay to fail, and it's important to keep trying. Repetition is what helps you improve. Sometimes you have to get uncomfortable before you become comfortable."
