Former state champions from NDCL's track & field program returned over Christmas break to show their support and offer guidance to the current team. The visit from alumni Andrew Ryan '22, Tim Herczog '22,
Brian Bates '22,
Javon King '23, Danny Yanick '23,
Finn Matheney '23, and
Colm Matheney '24 served as a perfect example of the strong tradition and camaraderie that defines the program.
Rob Bonchak '26,
Sean Butler '25, and
Brennen Burke '25 are essential members of today's current team, creating a bridge between the past and present while inspiring the next generation of athletes. Their experience and success provide valuable insight—not only on techniques and strategies but also on how to stay motivated and focused throughout the season. For those involved with the team or following their progress, this mentorship plays a vital role in fostering a successful and supportive environment for all athletes.
These alumni were the first in school history to win a state title in track & field, setting a high standard of excellence. The group has claimed two 4x400 meter relay titles—Tim, Andrew, Javon, and Danny secured the first championship in 2022, while Colm, Sean, Brennen, and Rob won the 4x400 title in 2024.
Brian Bates made history by winning the first individual state championship in the outdoor 800-meter run and setting a school record in 2022.
Rob Bonchak won the outdoor 400-meter dash title in 2024 while also setting a school record.
Ralph White, in his fourth year as head coach, reflected on the significance of each athlete's contributions, crediting them with instilling a winning attitude.
"Andrew was the first one with the attitude and enthusiasm that I was looking for. Soon, Danny came along and developed that competitive fire. Tim was an avid lifter, and with his influence, everyone got stronger, leading to better performances. Finn and Javon were great team members. They would run whatever the team needed and did it well. Colm is probably the best all-around athlete our program has had—super intense and a workaholic. Then Brian decided he wanted to be the best and took everything to another level.
Brennen Burke and
Sean Butler did their best on the biggest stage last season.
Rob Bonchak is a lot like Danny, a fierce competitor."
White also commented on the dedicated athletes at NDCL and their relentless desire to better themselves and each other on and off the competition field.
"At NDCL, we may not always have the rawest talent, but we have teamwork, and we genuinely care for each other. This group beat more talented teams because they depended on and encouraged each other and worked extremely hard. I am proud to say that I was their coach of these fine young men. I believe the best is yet to come."
