Workinger Wins Division I District Title; State Tournament Information Announced

Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin junior Ella Workinger is headed to the OHSAA Division I Girls Tennis State Championships as a district champion after completing an impressive four-match run through the Northeast Ohio District Tournament.

Workinger secured the district singles title Saturday, Oct. 10, with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Adriana Guillermo of Magnificat in the championship match. The victory was particularly meaningful after Guillermo defeated Workinger in the sectional final earlier in the postseason.

Workinger began district competition Oct. 8 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Sadhvi Kurra of Revere. She followed with a 6-1, 6-1 quarterfinal win against Mallory Koch, the No. 1 seed from Strongsville, to secure her state tournament berth.

Returning Saturday, Workinger defeated Anna Li of Hudson 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals before completing her championship run against Guillermo. Across four district matches, Workinger did not surrender a set.

"Super proud of Ella; was patient and played great defense in the corners; when the opportunity ball appeared, she attacked to the corners," NDCL coach David Cole said. "Ella also worked through adversity when her opponents started to rally; she settled down and regained control and momentum."

The district championship adds to an outstanding junior season in which Workinger earned North Coast Conference Most Valuable Player honors. She now advances to the state tournament as the No. 1 singles seed from Northeast Ohio.

The OHSAA Division I Girls Tennis State Championships will take place Thursday and Friday, Oct. 15-16, at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.

First- and second-round singles competition begins Thursday at 9 a.m., with Division II singles matches followed by Division I singles. Players advancing will compete in Friday's semifinals and championship rounds, beginning at 9 a.m.

Workinger will represent NDCL against the state's top Division I singles competitors as she continues a postseason defined by consistency, composure and competitive excellence.
