Lion Sports Weekly (Week of February 2nd)

ICE HOCKEY 
vs CVCA (2/2)- Ice Hockey defeated CVCA 3-2 in an impressive comeback win in the first round of the Baron Cup tournament. With just 5:25 remaining in overtime, Nic Davis scored his second of two goals in the game to give the Lions a 3-2 lead and victory. NDCL trailed CVCA 0-2 at the start of the third period before Joshua Hollobaugh scored to put the team on the board. Nic Davis tallied his first goal with 5:35 left in the third period to tie the score at 2-2 and scored the game-winning goal in overtime. Hollobaugh and Colin Krajnak recorded one assist each in the win. The Lions face Westlake in the second round of the Baron Cup tournament on Tuesday at 8:00 PM. What a win for the red-hot NDCL Ice Hockey team! 

vs Westlake (2/2)-
 Ice Hockey fell 6-2 to the number one seeded Westlake Demons in the second round of the Baron Cup tournament. Nic Davis and Colin Krajnak put the Lions on the board in the third period, both scoring a goal. Krajnak's goal was assisted by Davis. Goalie Nate McClellan tallied 29 saves in the game. Ice Hockey completes the regular season with a combined record of 14-4-1 and now awaits their OHSAA tournament opponent.  
 
BOWLING 
at Edgewood (2/2)- Girls Bowling defeated Edgewood 1746-1484 for their 11th win of the season. The team was led by Josie Mislay with a season high game of 220 and a high series of 386. Boys Bowling fell to Edgewood 2290-2065. Aaron Cotturo served as the team's bowler in the match with a 214 high game and 415 high series.  

Boys
 vs Mayfield (2/3)- Boys Bowling lost to Mayfield by a slim 36 pins 1999-1963 on Senior Night. Mitchell Wesen led the Lions with a high game of 200 and a high series of 397. Seniors Wesen, Aaron Cotturo, Derek Scheidt, and Alex Willis were honored at the conclusion of the match for Senior Night.  

Girls
 vs Solon (2/3)- Girls Bowling fell to Solon 1824-1650 on Senior Night. Josie Mislay served as the team's high bowler in the match with a 154 high game and a 304 high series. Seniors Mislay and Allie Wiseman were recognized on Senior Night following the match. 

Girls 
at St. John (2/4)- Girls Bowling dominated St. John by over 400 pins 1786-1342. Marielle Matz led the team with a 179 high game and a high series of 354. The Lions moved to a 12-5 record with three matches remaining in the season. 

Boys at Chalker (2/5)-
 Boys Bowling lost by just 22 pins to Chalker 1795-1763. Mitchell Wesen served as NDCL's high bowler once again with a 208 high game and 400 high series.  

at NEOHS League Tournament (2/6)-
 NDCL Girls and Boys Bowling competed in the NEOHS League Tournament at Wickliffe Lanes on Friday. Girls Bowling finished in 5th place with 2,626 total pins. Allie Wiseman led the team in the tournament with a 157 high game and 420 high series. Boys Bowling took 12th place with a total of 2,859 pins. Derek Scheidt was the Lions' high bowler with a 175 high game and 471 high series. 

Boys at OHSAA Sectionals (2/7)-
 Boys Bowling finished in 11th place in the sectional tournament with 2,915 pins. Mitchel Wesen advanced to districts individually, taking fourth place overall in singles with a 204 high game and 566 series. Wesen is the eighth boys bowler in school history to qualify for districts. This marks the tenth consecutive year that NDCL has sent an individual/team to the district tournament. Wesen will compete at districts on Friday, February 20th at Rebman Recreation in Lorain.  
 
SWIMMING 
vs Andrews Osborne, Berkshire, Chardon, Perry, Riverside, VASJ, West Geauga (2/2)- NDCL Boys and Girls Swimming both finished in third place of seven teams in their senior night mini-invitational. Girls Swimming finished with 242 points. Brooke Dynes took first place in the 100-IM (1:01.94) and 50-breaststroke (30.20). Dynes was also part of the 200-medley relay team that took first place, including Madalena Fulton, Presley Engoglia, and Lillie Engle (2:04.77). Tommy Matthews had the top individual finish for Boys Swimming and took second place in the 50-breaststroke (30.96). The 200-freestyle relay team of Matthews, Mark LaForest, Noah Scheider, and Eli Charlton finished in third place with a time of 1:41.51.  
 
BOYS BASKETBALL 
at CVCA (2/3)- Boys Varsity Basketball lost a hard-fought battle to a talented CVCA squad 72-66. The Lions trailed by just six points heading into halftime 41-34 before being outscored 20-7 in the third quarter. NDCL then faced a 20-point deficit heading into the fourth before going on a 10-0 run to cut CVCA's lead to just six points. The Lions' comeback fell just short as the Royals were able to knock down timely free throws to maintain their lead. Three Lions scored in double figures, led by Jason Rook with a team and career-high 19 points. Wesley Jacobson followed with 17 and Luke Keep recorded 14 points that included three three-pointers. Boys JV Basketball topped CVCA 56-46 and Freshman Basketball lost 33-29. Boys Varsity Basketball moved to 5-5 in North Coast Conference play. 

vs Ursuline (2/6)-
 The Boys Varsity Basketball game versus Ursuline was suspended in the second quarter due to a power outage. The Lions were leading the Irish 22-21 when the outage occurred mid second quarter of play. Boys JV and Freshman Basketball lost to Ursuline 52-41 and 52-38. 

at VASJ (2/7)-
 Boys Varsity Basketball fell 81-88 to VASJ on the road. The Lions hung in the first two quarters and led the Vikings 37-36 at halftime. VASJ found their offensive groove in the second half, outscoring the Lions 52-44. Brendan Hernan led all scorers with a career-high 28 points. Wesley Jacobson followed with 20 and Jason Rook contributed double figure scoring with 13 points. Boys JV Basketball defeated VASJ 58-56 and Freshman Basketball lost 58-48. The Varsity Lions moved to 7-10 with four games remaining in the regular season. 
 
GIRLS BASKETBALL 
at Holy Name (2/4)- Girls Varsity Basketball battles at Holy Name but fell in a 59-57 heartbreaker on the road. Both teams were neck-and-neck through four quarters, but timely plays down the stretch made by Holy Name sealed their two-point win. Despite the loss, the Lions recorded multiple season-highs. The team knocked down a season-high 11 three-pointers, three players scored in double figures, and Emma Surbey recorded two new season-highs in points (12) and three-pointers made (4). Coco Cochran scored a team-high 15 points and Maya Rowan followed with 12. Girls JV Basketball lost 30-25 to Holy Name.  
 
vs Lake Catholic (2/7)- Girls Varsity Basketball executed a season sweep of the Lake Catholic Cougars with a 42-37 win in McGarry Gymnasium. After a close first three quarters of play, the Lions took control in the fourth quarter, outscoring Lake Catholic 17-10. Coco Cochran scored a team-high 11 points in the game. Emma Surbey knocked down three-pointers for nine points total. The Lions moved to 5-6 in conference play and 11-10 overall. Girls JV Basketball topped Lake Catholic 31-26.  
 
WRESTLING 
vs Bedford (2/5)- NDCL Wrestling defeated Bedford 51-5 in their Senior Night home dual in McGarry Gym. Wil Dauenhauer, David O'Reilly, Carter Lesniok, Anthony Chamoun, Seth Smith, Trey Sweeney, Zach Bores, Massimo Beatrice, and Caleb Roach all picked up match wins for the Lions. Before the start of the dual, seniors Massimo Beatrice, Zach Bores, Lauren Cameron, Seth Smith, and matstat Allie Wiseman were all recognized.  
 
INDOOR TRACK 
NEOITC Green Meet #3 (2/5)- Boys and Girls Indoor Track competed in the final meet of the NEOITC Green Meet series at SPIRE Institute on Thursday. Leading the way for the Girls Indoor Track team was Emilee Gruss and Lucy Edger. Gruss took second in the 200M dash (27.03) and fifth in the 400M dash (1:02.33). Edger also finished second in the 800M run (2:24.80). Elena Kijauskas finished fourth in the 60M hurdles (13.09) and Melanie Drazdik followed Gruss in the 400M dash in eighth place (1:06.51). The 4x400 relay team took fourth with a time of 4:25.05. For the Boys Indoor Track team, Kristian Mazar and Jakob Henderson tied for fifth place in high jump with a 5'4 mark. Mazar also took ninth in the 60M hurdles (10.32). The 4x200 and 4x400 both finished in tenth place in 1:41.22 and 3:58.11.   

Kent State HS Meet #2
 (2/8)- Members of the Girls and Boys Indoor Track teams competed in the Kent State HS Meet #2 at Kent State University on Sunday. Top ten finishes were earned by Emilee Gruss in the 200M dash (6th place, 26.68), Melanie Drazdik in the triple jump (10th place, 26-6.25), and the girls 4x800M relay (5th place, 11:56.51). Kristian Mazar paced the boys team with the top individual finish, taking 16th in the high jump with a 5'6 mark.
