Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin girls soccer recorded its first shutout of the season Monday, battling Avon Lake to a 0-0 draw at NDCL.
Junior goalkeeper Sadie Wurm and the Lions' defense kept the Shoregals off the scoreboard throughout the match as both teams created opportunities but were unable to find a breakthrough.
The clean sheet represented an important step for an NDCL defense that has faced several competitive tests during the opening month of the season.
Avon Lake generated chances to break the deadlock, but Wurm and the Lions were able to answer each threat. NDCL created opportunities of its own at the other end, but neither side could produce the deciding goal.
The result was NDCL's second draw of the season after the Lions previously played Willoughby South to a 1-1 tie on Aug. 18.
Monday's defensive performance also provided a response following NDCL's 2-1 conference setback to Padua. Against Avon Lake, the Lions kept a clean sheet for the first time this fall.
NDCL returns to North Coast Conference competition Wednesday, Sept. 16, when the Lions host Elyria Catholic.
