GIRLS SOCCER
at Gilmour (10/14)- Girls Varsity Soccer's season ends in the first round of the OHSAA Sectional Tournament with a 1-0 loss to Gilmour. The game was a defensive battle for both teams, as the score was tied 0-0 at halftime. The Lancers scored on a corner kick with 20 minutes to go in the second half. The Lions were unable to convert on a score to tie the game back up, falling 1-0. Both teams fought hard and were evenly matched throughout the game, the Lions just came up short in the end.
Sadie Wurm had an impressive night in goal with over five miraculous saves to stop Lancer scores. Varsity Soccer ends the 2024 season with a NCC title and record of 8-7-3.
BOYS SOCCER
vs Akron North (10/15)- Boys Soccer defeats Akron North at home in the OHSAA sectional semifinal 1-0. NDCL goal was scored in the first half by
Ryan Cvitkovic on an assist from
Brennen Burke.
Kristian Mazar had his fourth shutout in goal this season. The team will play for a sectional championship this Saturday versus University School. If the Lions win, they will advance to the district tournament.
at University School (10/19)- Boys Soccer fell 4-1 to a talented University School team in the sectional final. The Lion goal was scored by junior
Ryan Cvitkovic. Boys Varsity Soccer finishes the 2024 season 6-6-6.
GIRLS TENNIS
State Tournament (10/17)- The doubles team of
Elena Fleming &
Ella Workinger went 2-0 on the first day of the state tournament and advanced to the final four. In their first match versus Hilliard Davidson, the duo took a comfortable 6-0, 6-1 victory. In the quarterfinal versus Mason, Fleming & Workinger won in a three-set thriller. They dropped the first set to Mason 5-7, won the second set 6-3, and won the third set in a tight 6-4 battle. Fleming & Workinger will face Anthony Wayne High School in the state semifinals on Friday.
State Tournament (10/18)- In day two of the state tournament, Fleming and Workinger faced Anthony Wayne in the semifinals. They lost the first set 4-6 and stormed right back like they did in the quarterfinal to win the next two 6-1 and 7-5. With that win, the duo advanced to the state championship match. Fleming and Workinger faced the defending state champion doubles team from Mason High School in the final. After putting up a great fight, Fleming and Workinger came up just short of a state title falling to Mason. Fleming and Workinger finished as the OHSAA DI Doubles State Runners-up.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
vs Garrett Morgan (10/17)- Girls Volleyball opens OHSAA tournament competition with a dominant 3-0 win over Garrett Morgan. They team will play Madison High School in the sectional semifinal on Tuesday, October 22
nd. Senior Sophia DeRenzo had a solid night across the board for the Lions. She had three digs, three aces, one kill, and a team-high seven assists. Mia Moissis added two digs, two kills, and a team and game-high ten aces. The Lions will play Madison in the sectional semifinal on Tuesday, October 22nd at Kenston High School.
FOOTBALL
Varsity at Padua Franciscan (10/18)- Varsity Football dropped their week nine contest to Padua on the road 38-21. Quarterback
Ryan Lipowski threw for 158 yards and completed 22 of his 36 passes for one touchdown. His touchdown pass was caught by senior
Connor Hernan who caught eight catches for 49 yards.
Angelo Tamburrino led the Lions' running back core with 12 carries for 65 yards. Junior
Brendan Hernan and sophomore
Joey Penny put together a solid night defensively. Hernan had five tackles, two for a loss along with one sack. Penny had five tackles, three for a loss with one interception. The Lions will wrap up their 2024 regular season campaign this Friday night versus Lake Catholic.
JV vs Padua Franciscan (10/19)- JV Football defeated Padua 36-24.
Freshman vs Padua Franciscan (10/17)- Freshman Football lost to Padua 18-6 at home.
CROSS COUNTRY
District Meet (10/19)- Both Girls and Boys Cross Country teams advanced to the OHSAA Regional Meet after solid performances from both teams. The Boys team finished fourth overall out of 20 teams. Freshman
Owen Thomas led the way, finishing fourth individually with an outstanding time of 16:14.71. Following closely behind was fellow freshman
Nathan Zanko with a time of 16:45.42 and an eleventh-place finish.
Peter Bates,
Drew Downing, and Quinn Linnert were the other three Lions that contributed to their fourth-place team finish. The Girls team finished seventh overall of 20 teams competing at districts. Sophomore
Zoey Myers led the Lions with a 13
th place individual finish and a time of 20:41.66. Freshman
Avery Horvath followed in 27
th place with a time of 21:04.66. Andrea Heredia-Salinas, Lucy Edger, and Sarah Boehnlein were the other top five finishers for the Girls team. Congratulations to both teams!
