Ab came to Latin in 1935 after graduating from the University of Dayton. During his time at Latin, he served as head coach of the outdoor/indoor track and ice hockey teams. He was an assistant coach in football. Ab was regarded as one of the best line coaches in the state. He developed outstanding lines under four coaches: Eisele, Bossu, Mormile, and George. His scouting reports and game plans are widely regarded as vital part of Latin's football successes. In 15 years of coaching track, he had at least one athlete qualify for the state finals. As a hockey coach for five years, 12 players were named to All-Scholastic teams. His indoor track teams set 26 meet records, won more than 200 events, and captured eight team championships. His outdoor teams were consistently the top Catholic squads. The teams Ab helped coach recorded 96 victories, 25 losses, and eight ties. The teams appeared in six Charity Games.
