Don was a member of the varsity basketball team for three years. As a junior, he wa a spot starter on a team that won 23 games in a row before losing their only game in the state semifinals in Columbus. As a senior, Gacey became a regular as the team won 17 games and lost six. They were district champions. Don was the third highest scorer on the team with 288 points. Don went on to John Carroll University where we starred in basketball and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1978.

Gacey was the Latin varsity coach from 1974 until the school's closing in 1979. During those five years, his teams won 90 and lost 29. They won two Crown Conference championships (1977 & 1978), four district and four regional titles from 1976 to 1978, the State "AA" championships in Columbus, and two State "AA" final runner-ups in 1978 and 1979.

The 1976-77 team had the most wins in the school's history and second best record as they won 24 and lost two for a season.
