John Kelley was a three-year starter on the Latin football teams in the late 1920s. He broke into the lineup at right tackle in 1927. The team went undefeated through the State Championship game with Coshocton. He had the trill of going to Waco, Texas, to play for the national football championship. In his junior year, John played on Herb Eisele's first team and helped the Lions win a share of the old Catholic League title. In his senior year, he captained the Lions and was named All-Catholic at tackle.

John went on to play four years at the University of Dayton.
