Pete Ghrila was captain of the football team for the 1950 season. The team had a 5-3-1 record under coach Auggie Bossu and finished second in the East Senate. As quarterback, Ghirla passed for eight touchdowns and an extra point. He also punted and handled the kickoffs and played on defense. Ghirla was selected to the first team All-Scholastic at the quarterback position. Peter also earned a letter in his junior year passing for seven touchdowns, one for 78 yards and another for 68 yards and also scored a touchdown. Ghirla was also an excellent basketball player. In his senior year, the team was 14-3 to tie for first place in the East Senate. The team lost the playoff game and played Rhodes, the second place West Senate team won the City Title 52-50 in overtime. Pete scored Latin's only four points. Pete went on to John Carroll University and was chosen to the Catholic All-American team in 1953. He entered the service and was on the All-Army Eleven in 1956.
