Leo earned five varsity letters at Cathedral Latin. He lettered three years in track and two years in football, under the tutelage of legendary Latin teacher and coach Herb Eisele. Leo specialized in the quarter mile and as a member of the school's two-mile relay team.

He was a member of the 1943 City Championship team that dethroned Lincoln High School with a 18-12 upset victory over the Presidents, snapping their 29-game win streak. Leo also started at left halfback on the 1944 City and State Championship team that went 10-0 and had eight shutout victories. The 1944 Lions defeated Lincoln again in the city title game with a 33-0 drubbing before a crowd of over 52,000 at Cleveland Stadium. Leo scored 11 touchdowns that year, including three pass receptions. He possessed great speed, sure hands, and much heart. Leo also returned punts and kickoffs, including a key 17-yard punt return that set up the only score in the Lions' 6-0 upset victory over the defending state champion Massillon Tigers. It was Massillon's second loss in its previous 65 games.

After graduating from Latin, Leo attended Purdue University on a football scholarship. He wa a veteran of both the U.S. Army and Navy.
