Dick Telenko played guard on some great Latin football teams in 1953 and 1954. In 1953 and 1954 the Lions went 8-1 and 10-0. That one loss was by one point to Benedictine during coach Dan Mormile's first year at Latin. The team won 10 and lost none and beat Holy Name for the city title, while outscoring its opponents 415-26 in 1954. Latin's unbeaten and untied 1954 team, which many observers felt should have been state champs, had many outstanding players. Many local sportswriters would highlight Dick Telenko, the large guard, who excelled both on offense and defense. This line that Dick played with was often praised by coach Mormile as being responsible for getting the ball by forcing fumbles and blocking kicks. Telenko was an important member of that line and in his senior year gained All-Senate, All-Catholic, and All-Scholastic honors.Â
Dick was selected on All-Time, All-Scholastic team of Greater Cleveland in 1961 with Dick Mahoney ;28 and Bill McKeon '45.
