Earle Gentile was an outstanding halfback for Latin in the 1940s. He broke into the starting lineup as a junior during the 1946 season. He was second on the team with nine touchdowns and helped the Lions to their third consecutive state championship. He was one of many stars in a 35-6 victory over Holy Name before 70,955 fans in the Charity Game. In 1947, he led the Lions in rushing and scoring with 72 points. He helped stretch Latin's undefeated streak to 38 games and their fifth consecutive Charity Game title, a 12-0 victory over Rhodes. Earle was noted for his exceptional speed. One of his five touchdowns against East High was a 103-yard kickoff return, the longest in Latin history. An All-Scholastic in his senior year, he went on to play football for The Ohio State University.
