Emery Csizma was an outstanding running back in the mid 1940s. All three years on the varsity football team, Latin was undefeated and won the mythical state championship. He was the first brought up to the varsity as a sophomore in 1944. He started his junior year but was sidelined the second half of the year with a broken shoulder. As a senior in 1946, Emery led the Lions in scoring with 73 points. Playing both at fullback and halfback, he was especially noted for his speed. He was also known for being a fine defensive safety. In his last game, he led the Lions to their fourth of five straight city championships. 70,955 fans at Muncipal Stadium saw his outstanding performance in a 35-6 victory over Holy Name. Emery's speed was evident on the track team. He was one of the fastest 100 and 220 yard dash men ever from the Cleveland area.Â
After graduation, Emery attended the University of Dayton where he played football for four years.Â
