Leonard Lapka starred for three years on Latin's varsity basketball teams. As a junior, he played center on Latin's first City Championship quintet and was team captain as a senior. Len was also an outstanding athlete on Latin's football team, being chosen as an All-Scholastic at end, as he helped lead Latin to its eighth City Championship before 53,356 fans as they downed St. Ignatius 13-7. Len had two touchdowns in this great game.
He continued his interest in sports after graduation from Michigan State University by coaching basketball in the Lansing area. He retired from basketball coaching after 24 seasons with a record of nine district, six league, two regional, and one state title.
