Jerry Beckrest was a regular running back on the Latin football teams for two years. He earned All-Scholastic honors in his junior year. During this period, he scored 18 touchdowns and 110 points on two successive undefeated City and State Championship teams. As a junior, he was the leading scorer of both the East and West Senate Leagues with 13 touchdowns in Latin's 6-6 tie with Massillon before 51,000 at the Cleveland Stadium. Coach Herb Eisele described him as an "exceptional runner who can also pass and back-up this line on defense."
As a senior he scored three touchdowns to beat St. Ignatius and after helping in wins over Massillon (14-7) and Glenville he was injured and missed several games. He returned late in the season to help in the city championship win over Holy Name. Jerry also was on the track team. After graduation, he attended Miami of Ohio where he played football.
