Phil McGrath was a member of Herb Eisele's first undefeated team which had a 10-0 season. The team won a City Championship, winning over West Tech 7-0 before 54,000 at the Cleveland Stadium and shared in the mythical state championship. Phil was a charging, fighting fullback who was selected by member of the team as the MVP of the squad. He was selected on the All-Scholastic teams of the Plain Dealer, Cleveland Press, and Cleveland News. McGrath scored touchdowns in every game during the regular season. Phil was also a three-year veteran of the tennis team and was the only senior monogram winner on the squad. He was a team captain in his senior year and the top singles player.Â
