Clifford Haggerty, although he earned a varsity letter as an end on the 1939 team, he was switched to the halfback position in 1940 and became the highest scorer in the state. Latin went on to beat West Tech 20-6 in the Charity Game for the City Title. As a result of his outstanding performance at halfback he was chosen on the All-Scholastic team of 1940. Cliff also ran track as a junior was a member of the 880 yard relay eam which placed first in the interscholastic relays at Cleveland Arena. As a senior, he ran the quarter mile, the 440, and mile relay. The mile relay placed him third in the state championships. He was voted the outstanding athlete of the class of '41 by the Latineer. He went on to Georgetown on a football scholarship and then transferred to Duke where he played varsity football and participated in the 1945 Sugar Bowl.
