John Van deMotter earned monograms in both football and track at Latin. He was the leading scorer on the 1934 team that went 2-5-1. In track, he was an outstanding hurdler and member of the relay teams. As a junior member of the mile relay team, they went undefeated outdoors winning the Mansfield Relays and the North Eastern Ohio district meet setting a new record. They went to Columbus and set a new State record for 3:28.80. Van deMotter also set a school record in the 110 yard high hurdles. During his senior year, he capped his track career by winning the National Catholic High School Meet at Notre Dame University setting a new meet record in the 110 yard high hurdles and finishing second in the 220 yard low hurdles.
