Hall of Fame
The Latin Basketball team of 1978 was going for the school’s first back-to-back state championship since the success of the 1977 squad and fell one point short in the state final against Portsmouth. Three Lions were named first-team all-conference: Colin Irish, Karl Morris, and Geoff Warren. Head Coach Don Gacey was named Coach of the Year. One of Latin’s matches against St. Joseph High School (now Villa Angela-St. Joseph) was televised on WVIZ and featured Hall of Famer Colin Irish notching 22 points and 14 boards.
The team finished the season with a 21-4 record, one of the school’s best in history. Now it has its place in the Latin Hall of Fame.Â
