Hall of Fame
The Latin basketball team of 1979 had a tall order following up a state championship and a state runner-up but was up to the task and followed with a memorable season of its own, which would be the last in Latin’s history before its closure that June. They started the seasons with a bang by scoring 100 points, without the benefit of 3-pointers, in a win against Erie Tech. The Lions rattled off 8 straight wins to finish the regular season, and the last game in Latin’s Gym before moving on to states. At Columbus’ St. Johns Arena, the Lions topped Claymont to advance to its 3rd straight state championship match but fell short to Dayton Jefferson 63 to 60. Another close but tough loss for the Lions, but no less a team that fought so hard up until the very end. Like the 77 and 78 team, this Latin team now has its place in the Hall of Fame.Â
