Hall of Fame
Edward Gowan was the senior quarterback on Latin's first State Championship football team in 1927. He was noted for his excellent ball handling and play calling. Ed was a consistent field general, rarely making physical or mental mistakes. No coaching was allowed from the sidelines in those days, and his abilities won many close games. He was a hard hitting safety on defense and also returned punts. He was chosen as an All-Scholastic quarterback in his senior year. Dan Duffy was the coach as this team captured the Catholic, City, and State Titles. The '27-'28 team is probably the greatest team in Latin's glorious history. Five other members of this team have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. This is a record to date. This team also played for the National Championship against Waco High School in Texas, losing 44-12.Â
