Francis McDermott was a member of the varsity squad as a freshman. He was in three games as a sub, first as a tackle, and second as a guard. In the third game he was a fullback and scored a touchdown against West Commerce. In the fourth game he started at tackle as Latin and St. Ignatius tied 6-6. For the next three years he was a regular starter at tackle.In the fourth game, he started at tackle as Latin and St. Ignatius tied 6-6. For the next three years he was a regular starter at tackle. As a senior, he was captain of the football team that went 7-1-1. They were the first team to beat both Holy Name and St. Ignatius in the same season. The team won the City Catholic championships and was rated the second best team in the city. He was selected to the All-Scholastic first teams. He may be the only player to have started against St. Ignatius for four years. Francis attended the University of Dayton and in his senior year was selected to first team All-Ohio. In 1931, he was selected at the tackle position on the All-Time Latin first team.
