Jack Nieser starred at fullback in football and was co-captain of the championship track squad in 1950. After playing as a reserve on Latin's city championship team in 1947, Jack came into his own as a speedy fullback in 1948 when he scored nine touchdowns. He became one of the most feared running backs in Greater Cleveland. Although the 1948 team was unable to keep Latin's string of five straight city titles going, they had an excellent 7-2 season under coach Augie Bossu. Losses were to the downstate power, Massillon and for the first time, were overcome by a powerful Benedictine squad 15-0. In Jack's senior year Latin's football fortunes hit their lowest mark as the team went 2-6-1. Despite this, Neiser sparkled at fullback and Latin was in almost every game until the final play. They tied East Senate champs East Tech 19-19 with a thrilling come from behind effort at Shaw Stadium. The team was better than its record and kept playing hard as they demonstrated by winning the last two games of the season. As a senior, Neiser scored 34 points and was named All-Senate and All-Catholic fullback. Neiser co-captained the track squad as they captured the Indoor Scholastic and K of C meets. When Neiser led the team outside, they won so many trophies in capturing the East Tech Relays and the Northeastern Ohio Relays.Â
