After graduation, Julius attended John Carroll University on a full football scholarship. As a freshman, he made the Blue Streaks' varsity team at offensive and defensive back positions. Julius volunteered for military service in 1943, interrupting his studies. While serving with the 102nd Infantry Division in Europe, he was awarded the Bronze Star for valor and the Purple Heart.
