Hall of Fame
Marcella Bambrick was one of the first star athletes at NDA. "Mar" was a starter on the first NDA "second" basketball team in the 1922-23 school year. This would be comparable to today's junior varsity team. That team held an interscholastic record of 8-0. As a junior, Mar helped propel the varsity squad to a record of 11-2. The team averaged over 24 points per game and topped the 40-point mark on three occasions. The only defeats were by one point to Shaker Heights and a game with two NDA starters missing.
During her senior year, NDA became a charter member of the new Catholic Girls' Basketball League. This team, coached by Miss Erma Lyle, won 16 games with just one defeat. The season was capped by winning the league championship by a 21-18 count over Ursuline Academy, which avenged the team's only defeat of the year.Â
Marcella also won the prized Silver Cup, presented by the Cleveland Press, for winning a shooting contest among over a thousand participants throughout the city.
Marcella passed away in 1962.
