Ray Zawadski was an excellent basketball player starting on a freshman team that went 18-0 and as a sophomore the JV team was 17-0. As a junior, Ray was the third highest team scorer with 266 points in 21 games, playing center, as the team went 17-4. The team won in the sectional tournament but lost in districts. During his senior year, the team posted a 16-0 record during the regular season and finished 23-1, losing only in Columbus to Kent Roosevelt in overtime in the semifinal game. They won the East Senate, sectional, district, and regional tournaments to be in the final four teams in Columbus. The teams on which he played for four years compiled a 75-5 record. Ray was selected to the All-Catholic, All-East Senate, and All-Scholastic teams, in addition to All-Tournament team. He was the third highest team scorer with 423 points in 24 games and tied a city record of 10 foul shots in a row. Against John Adams, he set a school record of 38 points in a game. Ray participated in football his junior year, and was also a member of the track squad for three years.
