Rich Wervey was a two-way stalwart at defensive end on the undefeated 1958 Latin football squad that claimed the city title with a charity game victory over St. Ignatius at Municipal Stadium. He made the varsity roster as a sophomore and was a starter his junior season when the Lions finished second in the East Senate with a 6-3 mark. As a senior, his performance earned him selection to the Cleveland News and Cleveland Press All-Scholastic teams, as well as the Universe Bulletin's All-Catholic and All-Senate squads.
His play also won him a four-year football scholarship to the University of Indiana. He played three years at Indiana and was team captain his final year. He was chosen to play in the annual North/South Shrine All-Star game in Miami, Florida his senior year. Rich graduated with a degree in business administration in 1964.
