Robert Irwin was a regular guard on the 1927 team that won 10 straight games, beating St. Ignatius for the Catholic City title, and then West High School for the City Championship. This team went on to play for a State Championship against Coshocton and as state champs, went to Waco, Texas to play for a National Interscholastic Championship. Unfortunately, Latin lost. However, it marked one of the greatest milestones of any Cleveland football team at that time or since that time. Bob was a regular on the wrestling team for three years. The 1926 team of which he was a member won the City-Wide Tournament. He was City Champ for three years in his weight class. Irwin went on to Case Institute of Technology (now CWRU) where he played football and was on the wrestling team. He only lost one match and that was for a state championship.
