As a junior, Tom was part of Coach Chuck Kelly's squad that defeated city champions East Tech by a score of 59-54. It was the third consecutive time the Lions topped East Tech, considered by many to the the best team in the state.

Despite a disappointing 7-12 senior team record against he brutal East Senate competition, Tom was named All-East Senate, All-Catholic (Universe Bulletin), and All-Scholastic (Call & Post).

Tom attended the University of Detroit for two years and was a member of the freshman basketball team. He transferred to John Carroll University, where he graduated in 1971.
